ScientificBackgroundSuperoxidedismutase(SOD)isanendogenouslyproducedintracellularenzymepresentinalmosteverycellinthebody(3).ItworksbycatalyzingthedismutationofthesuperoxiderADIcalO2ˉtoO2andH2O2,whicharethenmetabolizedtoH2OandO2bycatalaseandglutathioneperoxidase(2,5).Ingeneral,SODsplayamajorroleinantioxidantdefensemechanisms(4).TherearetwomaintypesofSODinmammaliancells.Oneform(SOD1)containsCuandZnionsasahomodimerandexistsinthecytoplasm.Thetwosubunitsof16kDaeacharelinkedbytwocysteinesforminganintra-subunitdisulphidebridge(3).Thesecondform(SOD2)isamanganesecontainingenzymeandresidesinthemitochondrialmatrix.Itisahomotetramerof80kDa.Thethirdform(SOD3orEC-SOD)islikeSOD1inthatitcontainsCuandZnions,howeveritisdistinctinthatitisahomotetramer,withamassof30kDAanditexistsonlyintheextra-cellularspace(7).SOD3canalsobedistinguishedbyitsheparin-bindingcapacity(1).
