Scientific Background | HMGB1, also known as high mobility group box 1 protein, and functions much like histones as they are important chromatin proteins. In the nucleus, HMGB1 interacts with nucleosomes, transcription factors and histones. The presence of HMGB1 in the nucleus depends on postranslational modifications. Hyperacetylation on lysine residues causes it to translocate into the cytosol. HMGB1 is also secreted by immune cells and acts as a cytokine mediator of inflammation. The mechanism of inflammation and damae is its binding to TLR2. HMGB1 also interacts with P53 and has been proposed as a target for cancer therapy. |
